LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- McDonald's has announced that it will stop using a controversial food additive known as "pink slime" in its hamburgers.

The filler is made from spare beef trimmings that are treated with ammonium hydroxide to kill bacteria.

The "pink slime" is approved by the
USDA.

The agency says that using the meat additive is safe, but the "slime" has been criticized by food activists, including chef Jamie Oliver.
