Fire Causes Power Outage at Akron City Hospitals
According to Mike Bernstein, spokesman for Summa Health System, the outage occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a substation in the parking lot caught fire. The blaze knocked out power to the main hospital building, but the emergency generators kicked on immediately. Bernstein said there was no disruption in patient service; however, area fire departments were notified to take patients to other hospitals while the power was out. An unknown number of people became trapped in four elevators when the hospital lost power. They were rescued a short time later, uninjured. Bernstein said the hospital was functioning normally on the generator and was not closed to patients. At 10:30 p.m., electric company crews were still working to restore power.
