CPAC Saturday Recap
News - News Blog

CPAC 2010 is over, and here is a recap of Saturday's stories:

Straw Poll In a surprise victory, Ron Paul won the CPAC Presidential Straw Poll with 31 percent of the vote. The results were met with a chorus of boos from the crowd, which was awaiting a speech by Glenn Beck. Paul had a strong contingent at this year's CPAC, so it is not that surprising that he would win the straw poll only to have the results booed. In a less surprising result, the straw poll showed that President Obama has only a 2 percent approval rating among CPAC attendees.

Gay Marriage Conservatives are usually considered to be anti-gay marriage, but at CPAC, an organization called GOProud challenged that notion. They are in favor of gay rights in the frame of a conservative agenda. I'll have an interview with their leader tomorrow on Newspulse.

Glenn Beck The conference wrapped up with a speech by Glenn Beck, who had people cramming into the ballroom as much as 3 or 4 hours before his speech to make sure that they would get seats. He blamed progressivism for the nation's problems, saying that the blame cannot be placed entirely with the president. He also challenged the notion of a big tent, a somewhat surprising move given the Reagan-centric nature of CPAC.

Thank Yous None of the work that you've seen on this blog and will hear on Newspulse would have been possible without the help of a lot of people. Thank you as always to Director of Broadcasting Joe Tarantowski and the WBWC Board of Directors, as well as Nate Lance from the B-W College Republicans, the CPAC staff at the American Conservative Union, the numerous press people I've worked with this weekend (especially Rachel from Rep. Pence's staff, who literally pulled me through a pile of people so I could talk to the Congressman), the XPAC staff, and the people at the Wardman Park hotel for providing a great venue for the event. I'm sure I'm missing people, but it's midnight and I get a little bit forgetful this time of night...

I've working on getting everything ready for Newspulse tomorrow, and it should be a great show. Tune in Sunday at 5:30 on 88.3 FM The Sting!

CPAC Friday Recap
News - News Blog
Friday, 19 February 2010 21:21

Day 2 of CPAC is done, and here are a few of the highlights:

Tea Party It's interesting to hear how the Republicans react to the presence of the Tea Party. Nearly all of the speakers who mentioned the Tea Party said something along the lines of that it's important to listen to the ideas of the Tea Party. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said that it is important to hear the Tea Party out, but that the Republican Party should not co-opt them. I think if the Republican Party or the Tea Party is to succeed in the short term, they'll need each other. Long term, however, I think that the Tea Party could make it work if they become more organized. It could cause short-term problems for conservatives, though, as it is likely that the conservative base would split between the two parties.

Young Folks The chorus of Peter, Bjorn, and John's "Young Folks" certainly doesn't apply to the people who organize CPAC. These people understand that Republicans got slaughtered in 2008 by the Democrats in the younger demographics, so they're making a great effort to reach out to college students. I talked to Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) about this today, so tune into Newspulse Sunday to hear his comments. One way that CPAC is reaching out is by having the XPAC lounge at CPAC. nationally syndicated radio talkers Stephen Baldwin (yes that Stephen Baldwin) and Kevin McCullough set it up to give the younger crowd something to do without having to leave the hotel. As I'm writing this blog, I'm listening to conservative comedian Ellen Karis, and the guys who do Auto-Tune The News on YouTube are expected to be here later. There have also been politicians in and out of here all day, so they're definitely paying attention to the kids.

Zingers The conservative comics aren't the only ones getting one liners in here at CPAC. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney drew laughs yesterday when he said that Lindsey Vonn lost her gold medal in skiing because President Obama is going downhill faster than she was. This morning, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty said that conservatives could learn a lot from Tiger Woods' wife Elin Nordegren because, as Pawlenty said that conservatives should "take a page out of her playbook and take a 9-iron and smash the window out of big government." With Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter on the agenda for tomorrow, I expect to hear several more before the weekend is done.

Pence Push Right after his speech, Mike Pence had his speech referred to as "one of the most important speeches ever given at CPAC." He was also likened to Ronald Reagan by former congressman David McIntosh, who called him the "next great communicator." I asked the Congressman whether he will run for President in 2012, and I'll play the answer for you Sunday on Newspulse.

Tomorrow is the final day of CPAC. Scheduled speakers include the aforementioned Beck and Coulter, as well as former UN Ambassador John Bolton, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and pundit Bill Bennett.

Tune in to Newspulse Sunday at 5:30 on 88.3 FM The Sting!

CPAC Thursday Recap
News - News Blog
Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:26

Day 1 of CPAC is all but done, and here are some of the highlights:

Venue change The conference moved across the street to the Wardman Park Hotel from the Omni Shoreham for this year, and I've got to say that I'm not so sure that I like the change. It definitely allows more people to be here (organizers are expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000), but the room is set up so that it's nearly impossible to get from one end to the other without going through the kitchen. Here's hoping that gets fixed before tomorrow...

Sneak Attacks The American Conservative Union (the organizers of CPAC) chose to kick it off with a bang today, as they pulled 2 "sneak attacks" on the crowd. The first was the surprise appearance of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who spoke before his daughter Liz. The other surprise appearance came from Senator Scott Brown (R-MA), who said that he actually drove his now-famous truck to DC to introduce former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Attitude One can definitely sense a change of attitude at the conference from last year to this year. Last year, the focus seemed to be how conservatives were going to deal with the Obama administration. This year, conservatives have more momentum on their side and as such, you can tell that the speakers at the conference are going on the offensive.

Marco Mania Marco Rubio, a candidate for the US Senate out of Florida, led off the conference this morning, and many of the speakers after him seemed to be stumping for him as well. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) said that he would like to see 30 Marco Rubios in the Senate. The push he has gotten from the nationwide conservative movement could very well push him over the top in the Republican primary, where he will take on Gov. Charlie Crist.

Check back tomorrow, as I'll be talking Tea Party and how young people have shaped CPAC.

Ganley to run for House?
News - News Blog
Thursday, 18 February 2010 07:01

Several outlets are reporting that current Republican Senate candidate Tom Ganley is likely to end his bid for the US Senate in favor of running against Democrat Betty Sutton in Ohio's 13th congressional district. This would pit the auto dealer against the author of the Cash for Clunkers bill. Sources told the Plain Dealer that the potential jump was brought on by internal polling that showed Ganley was trailing Senate candidate Rob Portman, but would be strong against Sutton. The filing deadline for both races is today. If Ganley does make the jump, it will make for an interesting race in Ohio 13...

Wednesday's Word

Here's a look at some of the stories we're following today:

RTA to lay off employees 219 employees will be out of jobs by April as a result of the transit authority's 12 percent cut in bus service. This amounts to about 9 percent of the workforce. RTA's budget is 12 million dollars lower than it was 1 year ago.

Toledo mall brawl Security will be beefed up at Westfield Franklin Mall in Toledo after a brawl last Saturday night involving 150 teenagers. Mall officials also say that they have adopted a zero tolerance policy for teenagers, meaning that they will be thrown out of the mall rather than given a warning if they misbehave. No word on if Westfield's malls in the Cleveland area will adopt the same policy.

Stow High paper returns The school newspaper was suspended after the administration refused to allow the paper to publish a picture of a student who committed suicide. The compromised reached allows students to have an appeals process if they believe the administration is restricting them unfairly.

Olympic Update Shaun White hit the extremely difficult McTwist 1260 in a practice run for the halfpipe competition, however there is no word on whether he will use it in the competition today. Both US hockey teams made short work of their opponents yesterday, with the men beating Switzerland 3-1 and the women destroying Russia 12-0. Kelli Stack of Brooklyn Heights scored a power play goal at 3:16 of the second period. Both US curling teams lost yesterday, with the men losing to Norway 6-5 and Germany 7-5, and the women losing a heartbreaker to Japan 9-7. Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis had a hard day as well, going off the course in the snowboard cross semifinals, dashing her hopes of redemption after blowing what was sure gold in Torino. Germany now leads the medal count with 9, but the US is right behind them with 8. Medals will be handed out today in women's downhill skiing, cross country individual sprint, men's doubles luge, men's halfpipe, and men's 1000m speed skating.

I'll be heading to Washington to cover the Conservative Political Action Conference tomorrow, so check this blog for updates throughout the weekend.
