Here's a look at some of the stories we're following today:

50 car pileup The crash shut down 29 miles of I-71 southbound in Delaware County for 7 hours as crews cleared the wreckage. The highway has reopened, but if you're headed to Central Ohio, be sure to take it slow.

BGSU professor suspended Associate Professor Bruno Ullrich was suspended on January 22 for making threats against his colleagues. The suspension was not a response to the shooting at the University of Alabama-Huntsville last week. A BG spokesman declined to describe the exact nature of the threats.

Olympic Update The US team picked up two more medals yesterday, as Seth Wescott won gold in Snowboard Cross, and Bode Miller took home the bronze in men's downhill skiing. Both US hockey teams will be in action today, as the women play Russia and the men play Switzerland. In other action, medals will be given out in alpine skiing, biathlon, luge, snowboarding, and speed skating. But perhaps the most important event today is the beginning of the much-anticipated curling tournament, with the US men's rink taking on Germany and the women's rink taking on Japan.

Here's a look at some of the stories we're following today:

No NEO Dems on the statewide ballot It's the first time in over 70 years that no Cleveland-area politicians will be Democratic ticket. The party says they're not abandoning Cleveland, but that the party has gained strength in other areas, especially the Columbus area. Seems like a smart move by the Dems considering their recent trouble in this area.

Settlement for wrongly accused man Robert McClendon will get $1.1 million. He was convicted of rape and spent 18 years in prison before DNA tests cleared his name. McClendon says that he is grateful for the settlement but it doesn't make up for the time spent in prison.

Lorain number 1 in Spanish-Speakers About 1 in 7 Lorain residents speak Spanish, and that is the highest percentage of any city in Ohio, according to the US Census Bureau. The rest of the top 5 are Cleveland, Columbus, Lakewood, and Fairfield.

Olympic Update The US Women's Hockey Team got off to a hot start yesterday, making short work of the Chinese team 12-1. Brooklyn Heights native Kelli Stack scored a goal and had an assist, and Sheffield Village resident Brianne McLaughlin had one save and gave up one goal in 8 minutes of work in the net at the end of the game. The US leads the medal count going into Day 4 with 6. Medals will be handed out today in the men's 500m speed skating, men's halfpipe, pairs figure skating (free skate is tonight), cross country women's 10k and men's 15k, and men's downhill skiing.

Here's a look at some of the stories we're covering today:

Agreement reached on jobs bill Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Max Baucus (D-IA) came to an agreement on a jobs bill on Thursday that had bipartisan support, but Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is threatening to remove some parts of the bill, including some of the tax breaks and other provisions intended to get support from Republicans. Many rank-and-file Democrats saw these moves as concessions to big business.

West 83rd suspect tampered with gas lines That's what prosecutors say William Calderwood did while he was inside the home on West 83rd Street in Cleveland that exploded, damaging 72 homes. He's being charged with one count of burglary and 72 counts of aggravated arson and is still in jail on $300,000 bond.

Lorain High smokestack falls It was the final phase of the demolition of the school, which was built in 1916, became a middle school in 1995, and was closed in 2005. This comes shortly before the merger of Lorain's two other high schools, Admiral King and Southview, which will take place in August.

Olympic Update The opening ceremonies, the preliminaries of skiing high jump, and the downhill skiing training runs are today. Watch this blog next week as we highlight Greater Cleveland's contributions to the 2010 Vancouver games.

Transition meetings to be held in public The move to make the Cuyahoga County government transition meetings public comes after complaints by the ACLU and many citizens. However, transition leader Martin Zanotti said that the move was not motivated by the ACLU's complaint. He had previously expressed concerns that the presence of the media would discourage volunteers from speaking freely.

Homeless shelter employee killed 59 year old Rita Ciofani was stabbed to death by an air force veteran who was evicted from the Volunteers of America shelter on East 152nd Street yesterday. 48 year old Raymond Ice attacked Ciofani with an ax. When police arrived, he turned on them and was tased before being shot. Ice later died at the hospital.

First Energy buying Allegheny Energy The Akron-based company will pay $4.7 billion in stock for Allegheny. The move makes FirstEnergy one of the largest power companies in the country, although it must still gain regulatory approval.
