Civil War declared in Syria

The Week- Syria is at war, Prsident Bashar al-Assad said this week as rebel forces struck at Damascus itself in the worst fighting of the 16-month conflict. Until now, Assad has insisted that the insurgency was the work of foreign-funded terrorists. But in a long, rambling televised speech this week, he said the country was in “a real state of war from all angles” and would pour all resources into winning. Meanwhile, insurgents attacked a Republican Guard base near the presidential palace, and regime forces responded by shelling surrounding neighborhoods, killing dozens. Gunmen also stormed the headquarters of a pro-Assad TV channel, bombing studios and shooting dead seven employees. A new U.N. report said rebel forces “have effectively challenged” the regime’s authority in Damascus, Homs, Hama, and the providences of Idlib and Aleppo.

Juvenile life sentences

The Week- The Supreme Court this week barred states from imposing mandatory life sentences on teenagers convicted of murder, offering a chance for freedom to some 2,000 inmates serving no-parole jail terms. “Children are constitutionally different from adults for purposes of sentencing,” said Justice Elena Kagan, who wrote the court’s 5-4 majority opinion. Kagan allowed that life sentences should not be outlawed, but said that the harsh practice should be discouraged because of what the court and society have learned in recent cases “about children’s diminished culpability” and heightened capacity for change.” Judges will now have discretion to weigh mitigating factors in a juvenile murder case, such as a prisoner’s background and age at the time of the offense, and any evidence of rehabilitation. Chief Justice John Roberts led the dissent, noting that these laws were passed by 28 state legislatures. “Perhaps science and policy suggest society should show greater mercy to young killers,” said Roberts, “but that is not our decision to make.”

Individuals cheating Horseshoe casino?

Dan Jovic Fox 8- Seven individuals have been indicted for cheating Cleveland’s new Horseshoe Casino. According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason, the individuals cheated between the dates of May 22, 2012, and June 17, 2012. The charge of cheating while gambling is a fifth degree felony, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Ohio Casino Control Commission. The following individuals were alleged to have been found cheating at the Horseshoe Casino; Nidal Abuaun, 49, of Lakewood, Nathaniel Emory, 40, of Cleveland, Russell Heidenreich, 46, of Cleveland, Aaron Higdon, 29, of Cleveland, Philip Koch, 54, of Lakewood, Theodore Shepherd, 53, of Cleveland, and Louis Wilkerson, 30, of Akron. The defendants were each caught cheating on various casino games such as Black Jack, Texas Hold’Em, Roulette and Craps. According to Mason the individuals cheated by either past posting, making a bet after the time allowed, capping/stacking a bet, adding chips to a bet after a good outcome is predictable, or removing bets on losing hands/rolls. Prosecutor Mason said, “Ohio now has statutes in place to address crimes committed in the new casinos. My office will continue to prosecute these crimes as we would any other crime in our County.” “From the very beginning we warned the would-be cheaters that our gaming agents, working under the Casino Control Commission, were all highly trained to spot casino crooks,” said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. “These indictments show that if someone comes into one of Ohio’s casinos planning to cheat, they should think twice.” According to Caesars Gaming around 500,000 visited the Cleveland Casino in its first month of operation. Cuyahoga County officials estimate that tax revenue from the casino will total roughly $20 million a year.

"Magic Mike" movie showing creates a fight between two viewers

Bliss Davis Fox 8- Two women began fighting in a movie theater over whether one should have brought children to see the movie “Magic Mike” Sunday. Police say they responded to reports of an argument between the women at the Great Escape Theater at 175 Cherry Road in Massillon. Witnesses say one woman objected to the other woman bringing girls to see “Magic Mike,” a rated-R film about male strippers. While en route to the theater, officers say they received another call saying the argument had turned into a fight. According to the police report, an assistant manager and a witness, who is also a theater employee, one of the women “chest bumped” and slapped the other woman. Police arrested the suspect they say started the argument and transported her to Stark County Jail. They say a summons could not be issued because she is a California resident.

Everyone is waiting for a ticket to see the President

Dan Jovic Fox 8- President Obama is set to embark on a two-day bus tour that includes a stop at James Day Park in Parma, and some northeast Ohio residents are excited. Lydia Flores of North Olmsted says she wants to be in the front row. “Oh yeah I can’t wait to see him,” said Flores. “I’d like to be right up there with him.” Flores and her husband were the first ones in line to get tickets on Tuesday morning at the Organizing for America Field Offices on Ridge Road in Parma. They were just a few of the dozens of Mr. Obama supporters who say they are eagerly anticipating the President’s visit to our area. “I’m just so excited,” said Kimberley Ware of Stow. “I missed him when I was in Kansas and I don’t plan on missing it this time.” Many individuals arrived at the President’s re-election campaign headquarters in Parma and Shaker Heights early Tuesday morning to get in line to receive one of the free coveted “Green” tickets to see the Obama speak. Joe Reed of Strongsville says he made sure he was going to get a ticket. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a sitting President, especially one that you support.” Obama’s two-day 'Betting on America' bus tour runs through the political battle grounds of Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. The President will celebrate the 4th of July holiday along the bus trip. He’ll also talk to voters about his efforts to fix the sluggish economy and get the unemployed back to work. Parma police were patrolling James Day Park to make sure everything goes as planned for the Presidential visit Thursday evening. If you have a ticket and are planning to attend the event make sure you arrive early. Seating will be limited and those in attendance will have to go through security checks. The President is expected to arrive at James Day Park at 7:15pm.
