Congress set to extend low student loan rates

CNN- Congress was voting Friday to extend low 3.4% interest rates on federally subsidized student loans for another year, barely beating a July 1 deadline when the rates would double. Both the Senate and House were expected to pass the measure. The bill to extend student loans is wrapped up in a bigger bill that spends $109 billion to continue funding for programs that pave roads and improve bridges. The bill also extends for five years the federal flood insurance program, which insures families against flood damage to homes. The vote on student loan rates would be good news for more than 7 million students taking out loans for the next school year who won’t have to dig deeper to pay off higher interest rates. President Obama brought national attention to the issue of student loan interest rates and started campaigning for it back in April. After the Republican candidate for president Mitt Romney also said he supported the extending low rates, Congress got serious about looking for ways to make it happen. Republican and Democratic lawmakers for months have said they agreed the interest rate should hold steady. The big sticking point has been how to pay the roughly $6 billion price tag to extend the low rates for another year. During negotiations this week, lawmakers decided that the revenue to extend the 3.4% rates should come from changes to the way companies fund pension programs. The deal would also limit how long undergraduate students can go to school without accruing interest on student loans to six years. The interest rate for subsidized student loans used to be 6.8%. But when Democrats took over the House in 2007, they phased in lower rates. The rates fell to the current low of 3.4% for subsidized Stafford loans this past school year, but are scheduled to revert back to 6.8% for the 2012-2013 school year. And with unemployment just below 24% for teenagers and 14% for ages 20 to 24, more young people are going back to school or staying in school, according to recent data by Equifax. Additionally, more students struggle to pay back those loans. Student loans that are three months late rose 14.6% in 2011 from the year before, according to Equifax.

The buzz on "National hand shake day is..."

 Obama care was named constitutional

CNN- Team Obama attempted to frame the political debate following the Supreme Court's ruling on health care Thursday, positioning the ruling as the final word on reform and urging Republicans not to resurrect earlier political fights. "All three branches of government have now agreed that President Obama's health care law is the right thing to do," read a memo from Democratic campaign officials. "It's time to move past the same political battles and fully implement the law."

Deadly house fire claims life of toddler

Kevin Freeman Fox 8- A family devastated…a neighborhood in shock. A 3-year-old girl dies when a fire races through a home. Neighbors placed stuffed animals on the charred porch of a duplex on Penn Place in northeast Canton. “I feel so bad, I mean, it hurts me in my heart so bad that a child…just hurts me, trying to fight back my tears,” said neighbor Terri Jones. Around 12:30 Tuesday p.m., flames tore through the home. Investigators say Latasha Brown, 35, was upstairs with her 12-year-old daughter, and a 13-year-old boy and her niece Takenila Harper, 3. “The residents said that they were cooking in the kitchen and we are right now taking a look at the kitchen and it does look right now that the fire did start around the stove area,” said Capt. Lorenzo Bagley, with the Canton fire department. Captain Bagley says Latasha and the older children managed to escape the flames, but they could not get to Takenila. Neighbors say the scene was heart-wrenching. “Tasha made it across the street, she was collapsed on the ground and said there was a young child in there that was 3,” said a neighbor named Edyie who would only give her first name. “I think it’s the most horrible thing you can see…it’s horrifying for the fire department to have to go in and retrieve,” she said. The flames melted siding on the home next door. This neighbor says it raged quickly…she says she had just walked past the home seconds earlier and saw nothing wrong. “Walked down three houses to my mother’s, couldn’t smell smoke, looked back and Tasha’s house was fully involved with the flames coming out the roof, yelled at my grandson to call 911,” said Edyie. “It was just really sad to see this happening to a family that you just…I am lost for words, I really am, I just can’t say anything to help them get their children back, or child back, it’s really sad,” said neighbor Christina Wendling. “The city is praying for them in their loss and we hope that they will find comfort and if there’s anything that the city can do, truly to help, we’re willing to do so,” said Canton city councilwoman Chris Smith. The Red Cross is helping both displaced families, one with food and clothing, the other with food, clothing and a place to stay overnight. Fire investigators say the home did not have any working smoke detectors.
