The Tribe

Bliss Davis Fox 8-The Cleveland Indians’ luck ran out Saturday, as they fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2. The Indians posted a run early in the game on Asdrubal Cabrera’s sixth home run of the season, but it wasn’t enough to seal the team’s momentum. By the fifth inning the Pirates were up 2-1 and the Tribe answered with another run making the score 2-2, but Pittsburgh pulled away from there. They sealed the deal with four runs scored in the ninth inning, bringing the final score to 9-2. Indians Centerfielder Michael Brantley’s 22-game hitting streak ended in the Tribe loss as well. The Indians will host the Pirates again Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

Cres Find Drowning Victim in Portage County

Katie Meyers and Bliss Davis Fox 8-Rangers have recovered the body of a male who drowned Saturday night at West Branch State Park. The Portage County Sheriff says the drowning happened around 8 p.m. off Porter Road. Authorities say the body of Jeff Fox, 22, was found at 12:05 p.m. Sunday in the West Park Branch State Park Lake near Porter Road. Portage County Sheriff Dave Doak says Fox was swimming with friends and heavy brush in the water may have contributed to the drowning.

Children found wandering the streets

Dan Jovic Fox 8-  An Eastlake woman was arrested and charged on two counts of child endangering after her son and niece were found walking the streets unattended on Thursday morning. The woman, Danielle C. Phelts, was taken into custody after police received a call from a neighbor stating that two children, both two-years-old, were walking down E. 349th Street. The neighbor called the children to her front door and tried to find out where the kids live, but she was unsuccessful. She then contacted police, according to the report.  Once police arrived at the scene a second neighbor alerted police of the children’s residence. When police went to the home they found the front door opened slightly and unlocked. Police knocked and yelled inside but no one answered. According to the report, officers then entered the home to find Phelts sleeping in a back bedroom. Phelts told the officers that she thought the children were playing the house and that the front door was locked. She was arrested after being informed that the kids had exited the house and were found four houses down the street by a neighbor. Phelts was taken to the Eastlake Police Department where she was booked on the charges and later released on bond. The children were released to the care of a family member.

Man offers teens money not to drink

(CNN) — Five years ago, Leo McCarthy lost his 14-year-old daughter, Mariah, when a drunken driver hit her and two of her friends as they walked down a sidewalk near her home. But he refused to let her tragic death become just another statistic. Knowing that the driver was 20 years old — not even old enough to drink legally — McCarthy made an unusual promise to the teenagers attending Mariah’s memorial service in Butte, Montana. “If you stick with me for four years,” he said during her eulogy, “don’t use alcohol, don’t use illicit drugs but give back to your community, work with your parents and talk to your parents, I’ll be there with a bunch of other people to give you money.” McCarthy has lived up to his end of the bargain. Along with Jimm Kilmer and Chad Okrusch, the fathers of Mariah’s two friends who survived the accident, McCarthy has given $1,000 scholarships to more than 140 high-school graduates who have taken Mariah’s Challenge. “I wanted to give them encouragement and to tell them that … you can be better and always be greater in the situation,” said McCarthy, whose nonprofit raises the money through private donations. Mariah’s Challenge is simple. Teens can go online and sign a pledge to not drink until they are 21 and not get into a car with someone who has been drinking. Toward the end of their senior year, if they have not been convicted of underage possession of alcohol, they are eligible to submit a scholarship application, which includes a 300-word essay explaining how Mariah’s Challenge has affected their life. Recipients are selected by McCarthy, Kilmer and Okrusch based on the essay and an interview. “Mariah’s Challenge stands for integrity, character and honesty and living a life of simple self-respect,” said McCarthy, 52. For him, seeing kids make responsible choices means Mariah’s memory will live on. “Mariah is forever 14,” McCarthy said. “I can’t get her back, but I can help other parents keep their kids safe. “We save one child, we save a generation, and that makes me encouraged to continue what we’re doing every day.”

The buzz for "Flag day" is...

Fire Causes Power Outage at Akron City Hospitals

According to Mike Bernstein, spokesman for Summa Health System, the outage occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a substation in the parking lot caught fire. The blaze knocked out power to the main hospital building, but the emergency generators kicked on immediately. Bernstein said there was no disruption in patient service; however, area fire departments were notified to take patients to other hospitals while the power was out. An unknown number of people became trapped in four elevators when the hospital lost power. They were rescued a short time later, uninjured. Bernstein said the hospital was functioning normally on the generator and was not closed to patients. At 10:30 p.m., electric company crews were still working to restore power.

1 Killed in Head-on Crash

Lindsey Buckingham Fox 8- One person was killed in a three-car crash in North Royalton Thursday night. It happened at approximately 7 p.m. on Boston Road. North Royalton Police Sgt. David Centner said a Dodge Neon was attempting to make a left turn onto Queensbridge Lane, when a Honda SUV driving behind it failed to stop, hit the Neon’s back bumper, then swerved into the oncoming lane and hit a Ford Focus head-on. A passenger in the Ford Focus was killed. The driver of the Focus was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center. The driver of the Honda SUV was taken to Southwest General Hospital. Further details about the accident were not immediately released.

Baby killed for gender

(CNN) — Nineteen-year-old Reshma Banu sits on the stairs outside her parents’ home, staring at the tiny screen on her cell phone. The video on the screen has her mesmerized: a very short home video of her baby girl, Afreen. The moments captured are precious because they show Banu’s only child alive and well. Afreen died in the hospital. She was three months old. Authorities say the baby was admitted to the hospital with bite marks, cigarette burns and a dislocated neck. Police say she was killed by her father. “After my delivery my husband had come to see me and the baby. He said, ‘It is a girl, why did you give birth to a girl?’” He wanted a boy, an heir. Girls were too expensive, he said. A couple of days after giving birth, Banu says her husband gave an ultimatum. “For her wedding we will require a hundred thousand rupees (about US$1,800 dollars) for all the expense. If you can get that amount from your mother, then keep her, but if you can’t, then kill her,” Banu recalled her husband as saying. She didn’t believe he meant it and was sure he would change his mind once he held his soft, bright-eyed baby girl. Three months later, her baby is dead, and her husband is under arrest, accused of beating the baby to death. Police say he confessed to the killing. This is by no means the first case of its kind in India. Attitudes, traditions, and economics have come together to make being a girl a dangerous prospect in the country, doctors say. Most of the time girls are disposed of long before they are born.

Fire at an abandoned apartment complex

Jessica Dabrowski Fox 8- An abandoned apartment complex fire on Cleveland’s west side was likely the act of an arsonist, Cleveland Fire dispatchers confirmed. Flames started in the basement of a structure on Lake Avenue near W. 83rd Street. Firefighters responded to the initial call just before 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Once everything was under control, the flames flared up again, but were then extinguished. The official cause remains under investigation.

Suspect in standoff surrenders

Jessica Dabrowski and Bliss Davis Fox 8- A man that launched a SWAT standoff in Cleveland surrendered to police and was arrested early on Tuesday morning. The Cleveland Division of Police SWAT unit responded to the 7700 block of Garden Valley  around 11 p.m. on Monday. Police were first told a male was holding a female at gunpoint, but later determined the reports were false. The man remained barricaded alone in the residence and the SWAT unit remained at the scene until he surrendered. The man was taken to the division’s central prison where he awaits charges.
