Romney Sticks with Trump

CNN- Donald Trump, whose penchant for questioning President Barack Obama’s place of birth showed no signs of abating Friday, is helping presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney raise money. Isn’t such close proximity to the “birther” conspiracy embarrassing for a candidate who’s serious about becoming the next president? That was the question posed by CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger to Romney’s senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom Friday. “I can’t speak for Donald Trump, but I can tell you that Mitt Romney accepts that President Obama was born in the United States,” Fehrnstrom said on CNN’s “The Situation Room.” Fehrnstrom, it turns out, doesn’t need to speak for Trump. The celebrity business magnate spoke out for himself in a Friday interview with The Daily Beast, saying he still had questions about Obama’s birthplace. “Look, it’s very simple,” Trump said in the Daily Beast interview. “A book publisher came out three days ago and said that in his written synopsis of his book.” The interview continued, “He said he was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia. His mother never spent a day in the hospital.” Trump was referring to literary agency who, in a promotional catalogue from the 1990s, listed Obama has having been born in Kenya. An employee of the agency recently acknowledged that it was her mistake. Trump isn’t buying it. “Now they’re saying it was a mistake,” he told the Daily Beast. “Just like his Kenyan grandmother said he was born in Kenya, and she pointed down the road to the hospital, and after people started screaming at her she said, ‘Oh, I mean Hawaii.’ Give me a break.” Obama released the long-form version of his birth certificate in April 2011, showing he was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. Soon after it was released, Trump announced he would not make a bid for the GOP presidential nomination. Trump’s latest foray into birtherism comes just days ahead of a big campaign event with Romney in Las Vegas. The event, which will also feature former candidate Newt Gingrich, is set to take place Tuesday at Trump’s International Hotel on the Strip. Romney’s campaign is also raffling a chance to have dinner with Trump for supporters who donate $3 to the campaign. “I want you: Dine with the Donald,” a campaign flier proclaims, along with a drawing of Trump in the post of Uncle Sam. The campaign offers: “Airport transportation in the Trump vehicle; Stay at the Trump International Hotel & Tower New York; Tour the Celebrity Apprentice Boardroom; Dine with Donald Trump and Mitt Romney.” Will such close proximity to an avowed birther damage Romney’s credibility? Their rivals certainly hope so. Obama’s campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt labeled Trump the “birther in chief” on MSNBC Friday. But Fehrnstrom, quoting a member of the Obama White House, said a politician’s supporters don’t speak for the candidate himself. “You know, not too long ago, Jay Carney, the spokesman for the White House made a statement which I think is correct, and that statement was that a candidate can’t be responsible for everything that their supporters say,” Fehrnstrom said. “And in this case, Mitt Romney has made it clear that the place of the president’s birth is not an issue for him. He accepts the fact that he was born in Hawaii. And we have many important challenges facing our country, and that’s what we’d rather talk about.”

Jail Mix Up

Fox 8-Officials at a Central Virginia jail discovered Friday morning that career criminal was accidentally released last week. As a result, the U.S. Marshals Service is hunting for Carter Tillery, a man they consider armed and dangerous. Tillery was serving a 30-year federal sentence on robbery and firearms charges in a West Virginia prison after being convicted in 2009 of robbing a dry cleaners in Petersburg. The mistake happened after the 31-year-old was transferred from the federal prison and taken to Piedmont Regional Jail to appear in court in Dinwiddie County. On Thursday, May 17, Tillery faced more than a half-dozen charges, including robbery, burglary, abduction and felony assault. However, the trial was not able to continue because of a witness. “The victim in the matter is 76 years old,” said Dinwiddie Commonwealth’s Attorney Lisa Caruso. “He has been in and out of the hospital, in failing health. He’s currently in a nursing home and it was difficult for us, to not be able to go forward, but it was impossible.” Accordingly, Tillery was taken back to the Piedmont Regional Jail, where he had been housed awaiting trial, and should have been sent back to the prison in West Virginia. However, a mistake by a jail officer meant Tillery was able to simply walk away from the jail on May 17. And even more baffling, jail officials did not discover the convict had been released until Friday, May 25. That means, as of Friday, Tillery has been on the loose for eight days. The U.S. Marshal’s Office was alerted that Tillery had been released Friday around 8:20 a.m. “He’s been out about eight days, so we definitely consider him armed and dangerous — and that’s how we are going to approach him when we locate him,” said Kevin Connolly with the U.S. Marshal’s Office. Officials said Tillery has an extensive criminal history. “He owes the better part of 30 years on a federal sentence for very violent offenses … and with his criminal history, we just want to get him picked up as soon as possible,” said Connolly. Connolly also said his office has information about how Tillery got away from the jail and that they are still investigating exactly what happened and why it wasn’t discovered for eight days. The U.S. Attorney’s Office was in the process of charging Tillery with escape Friday. If convicted, that could add another five years to his sentence. Tillery is described as a black male, with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5 foot 6 inches tall, around 150 pounds with tattoos on his chest and left and right arms. If you see Tillery, contact U.S. Marshals at 202-307-9100 or call 911. Court records list a slew of convictions for Tillery and classify him as career offender. When he was 17, documents show he robbed the same bank in Norfolk with his brother two times in just three months. After serving time for the bank robberies, he was arrested for DWI just a month after he  had been free. Later, he was arrested after a high-speed chase with police. Next, he was arrested in 2004 for indecent exposure after he made suggestive comments to a secretary, exposed himself and started masturbating inside a Prince George law office. Tillery was behind bars for the first six months of 2005 on indecent exposure charges. Then, two months after being released, he was involved in a felony hit-and-run. He was released again in March of 2009, but sent back in jail after committing three obscene sex acts. After that arrest and spending more time behind bars,  Tillery was convicted of robbing Swan Cleaners in Petersburg in 2009. Records show he pulled out a sawed-off shotgun and pointed it at the cashier at the dry cleaners. The woman opened the register and pulled out $100, but Tillery demanded that she hand over the rest of the money. When she said there was not anymore cash, Tillery forced her at gunpoint to a small room in the back of the cleaners. That’s when Tillery ordered her to “strip it” and take off all of her clothes except her underwear. Next, he told her to kneel and put her head down, while yelling for more money. He eventually located the victim’s purse from the front of the store and proceeded to dump the contents on the floor. He stole all the victim’s valuables, including IDs, car keys and her computer.  Prosecutors said Tillery has been breaking the law since he was 16 – and that he did not just rob the victim at the dry cleaners — but forever changed her life because of the violent nature and brazenness of the crime. Again, if you see Tillery, call police.

A gift from Beckham to Obama...

(CNN) – Soccer player David Beckham is getting back at President Barack Obama, after the President poked fun at Beckham’s H&M underwear line. Beckham was visiting the White House with his LA Galaxy teammates to celebrate their 2011 Major League Soccer Cup Championship last week, when Mr. Obama made the quip about Beckham’s underwear in front of the team. Now, Beckham tells the entertainment show Extra that he plans to send the President a “big box” of undies for the plug.

The Dragon Makes History...

(CNN) — “Like the smell of a brand-new car” were the words of International Space Station astronaut Don Pettit on Saturday after he carefully opened the hatch and entered the Dragon capsule for his first glimpse inside. Dragon connected with the station Friday, making history as the first private capsule to reach the orbiting spacecraft. Pettit opened the hatch at 5:53 a.m. ET with Russian cosmonaut and station commander Oleg Kononenko by his side. The two men, wearing T-shirts, khaki shorts, goggles and masks gave the thumbs up to the camera after they floated inside. The initial inspection went smoothly and ahead of schedule and the interior looked good, according to SpaceX, the private company that built and operates the Dragon. The crew will now begin unloading the more than 1,000 pounds of cargo that Dragon brought to the space station, NASA says. The cargo includes food, clothing, computer equipment, and supplies for science experiments. They then plan to reload Dragon with experiments and cargo for its return trip to Earth. Dragon is scheduled to splash into the Pacific Ocean several hundred miles west of California on May 31, according to NASA. Dragon launched Tuesday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. NASA collaborated with SpaceX on every part of the mission and gave final authorization for the flight. Dragon reached the station Friday and was “captured” by the station’s robotic arm just before 10 a.m. ET. Over the next two hours, the crew maneuvered the arm to bring the capsule in to berth and attach it to the station. The mission, hailed by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden as a step toward a new future of private innovation in the space industry, comes as government funding of the space program decreases. It also marked the culmination of six years of preparation to bring commercial flights to the space station after the retirement of NASA’s space shuttle fleet last year, which leaves the United States with no means of independently sending humans into space. NASA relies on the Russian space agency to ferry U.S. astronauts to orbit. In December 2008, NASA announced it had chosen SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launch vehicle and Dragon spacecraft to resupply the International Space Station after the shuttle’s retirement. The $1.6 billion contract involves a minimum of 12 flights, with an option to order more missions for additional cost, according to SpaceX. SpaceX was created by PayPal founder Elon Musk and is one of a few of private companies receiving NASA funds to develop the commercial transport of astronauts into space. Musk has said the commercial program — with fixed-price, pay-for-performance contracts — makes fiscal sense for taxpayers and fosters competition among companies on reliability, capability, and cost. The company is developing a heavy-lift rocket with twice the cargo capability of the space shuttle and hopes to build a spacecraft that could carry a crew to Mars.

The buzz on "International Tiara day" is...

Will the Chardon Shooter be tried as a Juvenile or Adult?

Fox 8- After a judge ruled earlier this month  that 17-year-old T.J. Lane was competent to stand trial as an adult Lane will now appear in juvenile court today for a hearing over whether or not he should be tried as an adult. The bind is because the consequences are much more severe if Lane would to be tried as an adult rather than a juvenile. Lane has not said a lot but what he has said says a lot. He admitted to police that he did bring a knife and .22-caliber gun into Chardon High School and fired into a random group of students. “The Ohio Legislature passed a statute that says, for certain offenses, (juvenile) court must bind that juvenile over to common pleas court,” Cleveland State University law professor Jonathan Witmer-Rich said.

And the American Idol is...

ATM Hold-up

Fox8- Amanda Salem of Cuyahoga Falls says she stopped at an ATM in Akron on May 15 because she wanted to withdraw $20 for gas. Security video shows her standing outside a Kenmore Boulevard bank when a man walks up and puts a gun in her side as others surround them. “He said give me all your money, the others were just standing there staring at me making sure I didn’t take off,” said Salem. “Then he held the gun to my head and started banging on the ATM trying to get the money to withdraw faster.” Salem, 23, said “I just thought about my son, my son you know holding him and just wanting to go home and I said ‘you can just have everything I don’t care you can take everything i just love my son and I want to go home." According to Salem the thieves took her $20, grabbed her purse and ran. The police posted the video on Fox 8 news and YouTube and within hours police got cedible tips identifying a 17-year old suspect. After getting warrants police arrested Derek Love of Akron on felony warrants for aggravated robbery with a weapon and parole violations out of juvenile court.

A Tallmadge man was taken into custody recently for a robbery gone wrong.

Fox 8-According to Akron Police, Gerald M. Smith, 70, of Dunbar Road, was arrested at his home and charged with aggravated burglary and felonious assault. These charges were a result of Smith entering an Akron home carrying a loaded gun in an attempt to rob the person inside. When he tried to strike the victim with the gun Smith instead shot himself in the arm, fled the scene, and was later arrested at his home.

Bringing you two for your Tuesday aka "International Day for Biological Diversity."

Bomb Threat

CNN- A passenger who claimed to have a device surgically implanted inside her triggered the security scare that led to the diversion of a North Carolina-bound jetliner Tuesday, a leading congressman's office said. Doctors aboard U.S. Airways Flight 787 examined the woman and saw no sign of recent scars, according to the office of Rep. Peter King, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. US Airways said the Paris-to-Charlotte flight landed in Bangor, Maine, around noon Tuesday because of an unspecified "security issue." The Boeing 767 carried 179 passengers and a crew of nine, airline spokeswoman Liz Landau told CNN. But preliminary information indicates there was probably no terrorist threat involved in the incident, a senior federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNN. The FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force was assisting with the investigation as a matter of routine, but the official said that does not mean there is a terrorism-related component to the incident. The aircraft landed after a passenger "exhibited suspicious behavior" during the flight, the Transportation Security Administration said. "Out of an abundance of caution, the flight was diverted to BGR, where it was met by law enforcement," the TSA said. King's office said the woman is a French citizen born in Cameroon and was headed to the United States for a 10-day visit. She was traveling alone and had no checked baggage. Lt Col. Mike Humphreys, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said a pair of F-15 fighter jets were dispatched from an Air National Guard base in Massachusetts to escort the flight to Bangor.

Rescue at Niagra Falls

Fox 8-A dramatic rescue unfolded at Niagara Falls on Monday after rescuers say a man jumped 180 feet over the edge. Witnesses reported seeing the man climb over a railing and jump over the Horseshoe Falls. Authorities believe he was trying to commit suicide. The man spent nearly an hour in the frigid waters before crews got him out. A sight-seeing helicopter lowered a harness, but the man refused to grab on. The chopper used its propellers to blow the man closer to the shore line where rescuers could reach him. The unidentified man was suffering from hypothermia, fractured ribs and cuts to his head and face. He’s in stable condition in the hospital. He is reportedly only the third person to survive going over the falls without a safety device.
